Artist Statement

I am a digital artist focusing on illustration, collages and design. Currently, my work addresses topics of the humanitarian crisis, situated in my home country of Myanmar. “The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” Alberto Giacometti. I draw a lot of inspiration from this quote, with my practice revolving around my intersectionality and striving for social change. My works do not echo reality, but connotes the urgency of the issues I address. In addition, they are meant to broaden the connections that can be made to my experiences for the viewers. 

Using design as a tool for communication, my works inform and appeal to the audience to learn about the topics addressed. Through the lens of a protest sticker, my works function as a token of raising awareness, justifying the experiences of my two different audience groups. Along with this series of sticker kits, I also examine the aesthetics of activism in my study of the relationship between contemporary art and protest aesthetics. The elements that draw attention in public signage are evident in my current works commenting on the military junta in Myanmar. Signage in public places orders the viewers to obey or follow the content on them; in contrast, protest signs and banners demand change in the system.

My works help me amplify my personal experiences to create familiarity and open up space for the audiences. Currently, I am exploring satirical themes and humor to discuss issues of power abuse, while raising transgression. While I work digitally, I gravitate towards creating works that belong out in the world and are tangible to serve for a social change.
